Nicole Mau | Counselor + Certification Coordinator

Schedule with Nicole here.

My aim in counseling is to provide a welcoming space where people can bring their suffering and struggles and be met with kindness, careful listening, and the steady hope of the gospel. It is a privilege to sit with others in both the ordinary and the heavy places of life, as we look together to Christ, the source and means of true hope and healing. His Word speaks with both truth and tenderness to every area of life, including the complexities of the human heart.

My counseling has been shaped through service in both executive leadership and counseling roles within the local church, where I currently serve as a deacon of women’s ministry. I carry a deep affection for the church and have a desire to support leaders through the hardships of ministry and to help cultivate sustainable cultures of care. I am trauma certified and have particular experience walking with others through anxiety, anger, grief, life transitions, burnout, and relational conflict. My training includes:

  • Formation Certificate & Essentials of Biblical Counseling Certificate – Christian Counseling & Education Foundation (CCEF)
  • Certified Biblical Counselor – Association of Biblical Counselors (ABC)
  • Foundations of Theology Certificate – Westminster Theological Seminary
  • Certified Christian Trauma Care Provider (Level 2) – Christian Trauma Healing Network

I am also the Coordinator for Gospel Care Collective’s certification program with the Association of Biblical Counselors. My goal is to provide clarity, encouragement, and guidance for those pursuing training, helping to make the path of learning both accessible and fruitful. In all things, I hope to embody the welcome that Christ, in his loving kindness, has extended to us.

On a personal note, my husband and I have been married for nearly 30 years, and have two wonderful adult children, who still love to play games with us! We enjoy camping in our vintage trailer, whitewater rafting, and spending quality time with family and friends.

More about Nicole…

What led you to become a counselor?

While working in the local church, I had many conversations with hurting people. This grew in me a desire to be better equipped to respond with compassion and grace while also pointing to the solid and unchanging hope of Christ.

What do you enjoy most about your work as a counselor?

I enjoy the great privilege of watching the healing and restorative power of the Spirit at work in people’s lives! I genuinely love to see people experience the nearness and forgiveness of Christ and be changed – to think, and feel, and act in new ways because of Him.

How do you take care of your own mental and emotional well-being?

I find the most important thing is to dedicate time to be still and behold God. This does not come naturally for me, so I try to schedule daily times of silence, which is also a great space to process thoughts and feelings with the Lord. Additionally, I strive to share my heart openly with trusted friends and mentors who will meet me with grace and truth.

Do you have any specific areas of expertise or personal interests within counseling?

I have a particular interest in walking with others through the death of a dream: loss, grief, and finding a new normal. I also enjoy working in conflict resolution and relational development within families or church staff.

What are your favorite books or resources related to counseling or personal growth?

There are so many, but here is what first comes to mind:

Prayer, Experiencing Awe and Intimacy with God & The Meaning of Marriage, by Tim Keller
Instruments in the Redeemer’s Hands & Lead, by Paul David Tripp
Gentle and Lowly & Ministry in the New Realm: A Theology of 2 Corinthians, by Dane Ortlund

In addition, some of my favorite ways to learn and grow happen in more personal settings, particularly through counseling groups and trainings as well as my local church.

How do you integrate your faith or spirituality into your personal life?

I want every aspect of my personal life to be increasingly grounded in my union with Christ. This has been my continual prayer, taken from the Valley of Vision: ‘Father, cement my oneness with my blessed Lord – that faith may adhere to him more immovably; that love may entwine itself round him more tightly; that his Spirit may pervade every fibre of my being. Then send me out to make him known.’

What hobbies or activities do you enjoy outside of your counseling work?

In addition to those mentioned above, I also enjoy quiet walks, watching or reading stories of redemption, and hosting gatherings in our home.

Are there any personal experiences or life lessons that have shaped your approach to counseling?

Experiencing Christ’s steadfast love and the Spirit’s restorative power in the midst of my own sin and brokenness, and that of others, has deeply shaped my approach to counseling.

How do you handle stress or challenges in your life?

With much fumbling and distraction, I try to: breathe deeply > remember who God is > remember who I am > worship the Redeemer King who holds all things.

What is one piece of advice or wisdom you find yourself sharing often with clients?

The direction you’re facing is far more important than the speed you are moving.
